About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Olean, NY, Beef-N-Barrel stands as a beloved American restaurant with a legacy that beckons food lovers from near and far. This cozy, family-run gem is famed for its approachable yet expertly crafted dishes that celebrate hearty, comforting flavors with a distinctly Western New York twist.

The atmosphere at Beef-N-Barrel immediately envelops you in warmth and charm, inviting you to settle in and savor every bite. As many guests have noted, the space feels both intimate and welcoming — a perfect setting for casual dinners, celebratory occasions, or simply indulging in a satisfying meal after a day of exploring.

At the center of their culinary acclaim is the iconic Beef on Weck, a regional specialty showcasing tender, slow-roasted roast beef tucked inside a soft kummelweck roll, served with horseradish and au jus that deliver mouthwatering depth and subtle spice. One can easily understand why patrons have described this dish as “melting in your mouth,” offering a uniquely savory experience that keeps guests coming back. Paired with their signature German potato salad, which boasts a perfect balance of tang and texture, this dish is a true standout.

Beyond the Beef on Weck, Beef-N-Barrel’s menu reads like a tribute to classic American comfort food elevated by thoughtful touches. From the richly layered, baked French onion soup crowned with a golden, bubbly cheese crust to the impressive Prime Rib Dinner, every selection is crafted with care and passion. The signature horseradish cheese potatoes add a creamy kick that perfectly complements robust cuts like the sirloin with handmade horseradish sauce.

Appetizers such as the blooming onion, fried cheese curds, loaded potato skins, and chicken wings offer crispy, flavorful starters that awaken the palate. For something a touch lighter yet packed with flavor, the spinach artichoke dip served with crispy chips is a popular choice.

Dessert lovers will be delighted by an array of indulgent sweets ranging from the Famous Beef-N-Barrel Apple Pie and Chocolate Mudd Pie to the uniquely charming Mock Turtle Ice Cream Pie and seasonal specials like the Pumpkin Russian. Each dessert captures that perfect home-baked feel, sweet echoes of nostalgia balanced with decadent richness. Drinks like the Strawberry Shortcake drink, Pina Colada, Daiquiri, and the creative peppermint snowball add a playful, refreshing finish to your meal.

Customer experiences highlight not only the quality of the food but also the exceptional, attentive service delivered by a friendly, professional staff. Guests consistently describe the waitstaff as “top notch,” while also appreciating the genuine family vibe cultivated by the two brothers who run the restaurant. Whether it’s a casual dinner or a special anniversary, Beef-N-Barrel’s warmth shines through, even scoring complimentary desserts as a thoughtful touch during celebrations.

While some patrons suggest minor tweaks, such as a bit more seasoning on the beef or slight moderation in garlic on the potatoes, the overall consensus underscores Beef-N-Barrel’s reputation as a must-visit destination for authentic, satisfying American fare with a local flair. The occasional critique only reinforces how passionate and engaged the community is with this landmark.

In essence, Beef-N-Barrel offers more than just a meal — it’s a flavorful journey through the comfort of classic American dishes, served in an atmosphere that feels like home. I enjoy beef. Like. A lot. I'm a Pitmaster. The beef at this restaurant is roasted and rendered to lean perfection. In my personal opinion, it does need more flavor, salt and/or garlic (just a tad) to bring flavor to the juices. The potatoes were overly salted and overly garlicked. I couldn't eat past the first bite. Which was unfortunate because they did look good. They were out of baked potatoes and sweet potatoes. It did take a while to get seated. We stood around the foyer for about 4 minutes looking for someone to greet us, but that did not happen. The guy behind the bar came around and welcomed us after attending to his patrons at the bar top. There were two ladies behind a counter off to the left of the foyer, but it looked like they were selling insurance or something non-restaurant related. Little odd observation. Atmosphere was very cool. Leather couches in booth, captains chairs at tables. Looks like this was the happening place to be back in the early 2000s. Nostalgic, and clean. It would be a nice - ideal chop house if they offered more proteins than roasted lean beef. Which -- is a very difficult cut to render properly. They've done it well!

Olean, NY's favorite steakhouse.. We were at the casino about 30 minutes down the road and we wanted a good steak for our anniversary and I didn't want to pay the crazy prices at the steak restaurant in the casino.. The two brothers that run the family restaurant are pretty awesome!! The food was delicious and we got free desserts because it was our anniversary! The porterhouse steak was huge it took me 4 meals to finally finish it off. The dessert took it over the top!! Thanks for being so friendly!! We definitely recommend this place if you're in the area... Get there about 5pm if you wait until 6pm the line could be down the street.. Margaritas were good to...

SUPERB Beef on Wick, well worth our hour + detour based on a friend’s recommendation. Great fries, when we saw the onion rings we wished we had ordered them as well. Spot on with the Wedge Salad though the home made Blue Cheese dressing was a bit too mild. They missed on the peppermint snowball dessert by putting the ice cream in a warm goblet and then adding too mush whipped topping (wasn’t real whipped cream), but these will be easy fixes the next time. Neat as a pin pub-like atmosphere with staff dressed in black and votives on the tables with real flames. Pleasant helpful Maitre D keeping an eye on things. Service for our meal was prompt, though a bit of a wait to order dessert. Will visit again.

One of the best local restaurants in the area. The restaurant is very warm and inviting. The staff is always friendly and efficient . The food is PHENOMENAL. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. My top picks are the blooming onion, the stuffed peppers, and of course, a beef on weck! The Strawberry Shortcake Drink is a must try, trust me, you’ll thank me later!

Really nice place, i liked everything about it. Service was great everybody was friendly professional. We had several appetizers, and they were all delicious. I sampled several different meals sharing with the 8 of us that were there and everything the other seven had was excellent. Unfortunately I just got the cheeseburger... And as much as I like the place i hate to say that it was hands down the worst cheeseburger have ever had in my life.... So in conclusion, definitely go there, you will enjoy the atmosphere. The service and the food just don't go there for a cheeseburger.

It's always a pleasure to come here for lunch or dinner. I rarely give a 5-star rating. Without a doubt, it's highly recommended. The service is excellent, the waiters are friendly, the food is delicious, and the atmosphere is wonderful; it's perfect for family, friends, or just your partner. If you're looking for a place to show off, this is it. Their cocktails are delicious. If you have the chance, try the specialty menu.
